In the time that I’ve been living and working here, I’ve come to realise that Fiji is a number of years behind the rest of the developed world insofar as technology and electronic commerce is concerned. The information and communication technology (ICT) industry, heavily promoted as Fiji’s next big thing, feels stagnant and immature. There are a handful of reasons why this is ranging from the high telecommunications costs to a seemingly lacklustre interest from local banks to promote electronic banking. Only Westpac has recently begun offering a general online payment gateway for accepting credit card payments through the Internet at this time. That’s a shame.

Piracy is big in Fiji. There's no arguing that.
Like the anti-drug lobby, however, the movie studios are approaching it all wrong. DRM will never solve the problem of piracy. It just gets in the way of people seeing their films.

Pirating the 2007 Oscars is a great example of what's not working.

Digital Talanoa : Fighting Technology

I wanted to watch some television earlier this week but no one in the house could find the remote control. With kids around, this isn’t that unusual a situation and it probably happens to most people. This time, however, the remote seemed to have completely vapourised.

The Fiji government's "e-Fiji" initiative is off to a flying start as exam results are made available online for Form Seven students. This is the first time exam results have been made available on the Internet. A screenshot of the application built for the purpose can be seen here.
