Oceanic is going to be doing some hiring over the next few months. We'll be looking for more developers, designers and account executives for sure but right now, we need an Office Administrator.
I've never been satisfied with the traditional process of putting an ad in the paper announcing available positions. In fact, we've never done this at Oceanic as far as I remember. ALL of the employees who have ever worked here came to us on their own or as recommendations by people we know and people that already work here. It's difficult to understood why companies spend so much time, effort and money advertising job openings externally when they have an existing workforce that can work with them on the task. This is not to imply that it's about saving money. On the contrary, recommendations from existing staff will always be better received and those recommendations are likely to be better fit employees. People are more likely to recommend like-minded individuals to work alongside. We've got real good people already. Makes sense to let them identify other good people.
We have a programme in place now to support this approach. It's based, in part, in an approach offered by a company I used to work for in New York.
Basically, Oceanic's referral programme works as follows:
- When we need to hire someone, we let everyone know there's an available position.
- Staff are then free to refer people to our open positions.
- If we hire someone who was referred, that staff member who did the referring receives $500 cash and also gets entered into a draw for a free weekend vacation somewhere. After a certain number of hires, we draw one of the referring names for that prize.
There has been a bit of confusion over how this works. Some staff have wondered what would stop someone from referring 100 people. The answer is: nothing. However, a system like this encourages employees to select their referenced choices carefully because they actually want them to get the job. Obviously, not everyone who interviews gets the job anyway. Also, direct or indirect supervisors of the designated job opening are not eligible to participate in this programme.
So anyway...Oceanic is looking for a new Office Administrator/Assistant.
The position includes answering phones, opening the office, checking and managing offices needs, supporting our finance manager, running errands and supporting other staff as required.
I think our Office Administrator is a key role in the company.
We'd like someone fun, bubbly, presentable and personable. Experience is not mandatory but a willingness to understand how to talk to customers and manage them is a big plus. Computer experience is also not essential but doesn't hurt.
Do you know anyone?
If so, have them call Oceanic at 327 5020 or email us at dreamjobs@oceanic.com.fj.
Unfortunately, the referral programme is not open to blog readers, only staff. However, you'd earn some very serious karma points if you help out here. That's definitely worth something.
